Ahmedabad Plane Crash: A tragic air disaster struck near Ahmedabad Airport as Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing Dreamliner en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, carrying 232 passengers including 10 crew members, went down in the Meghaninagar area, triggering widespread panic in the area. At least 40 people are reported to have died in the crash.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick plumes of smoke rising from the crash site, visible as far as Vastrapur. Emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, were rushed immediately to the spot to contain the blaze and aid survivors.
Among the passengers on board, it is being reported that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani may have been traveling on the flight, though this is yet to be officially confirmed. This is the first major plane crash in India over the past five years. The last plane crash happened in Kozhikode in 2020.
On August 7, 2020, Air India Express Flight IX-1344 was involved in a devastating crash at Kozhikode (Calicut) Airport, marking one of the deadliest air disasters in recent Indian aviation history. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft was operating under the Vande Bharat Mission, a government initiative to bring back Indian nationals stranded abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The flight was en route from Dubai to Kozhikode when it attempted to land during heavy rainfall and poor visibility conditions. As the aircraft approached the airport’s tabletop runway, it overshot the runway, plunged into a 30-foot gorge, and broke into two. The crash claimed 21 lives, including both pilots, and left over 100 passengers injured—many of them critically.
On May 22, 2010, Air India Express Flight IX-812 met with a catastrophic accident at Mangalore International Airport, becoming one of the deadliest aviation disasters in Indian history. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft was flying from Dubai to Mangalore, carrying 166 people—many of them Indian expatriates returning home. As the aircraft attempted to land on Mangalore’s tabletop runway—perched on a plateau with steep drops on both sides—it overshot the runway, failed to decelerate, and plunged into a deep gorge. The aircraft burst into flames upon impact, killing 158 passengers and crew. Only 8 people survived the crash, most of whom were seated near the front of the aircraft.
On 17 July, 1998, Alliance Air Flight 7412 crashed near Patna Airport in Bihar. The Boeing 737-2A8 was attempting a go-around during landing when it lost control and plunged into a densely populated residential area near the airport. The disaster claimed the lives of 60 people, including 55 passengers and crew on board and 5 people on the ground.
On 12 November, 1996, a catastrophic mid-air collision occurred near Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, marking the deadliest incident in aviation history. The tragedy involved Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 763 and Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907, which collided due to miscommunication and failure to follow altitude instructions. All 349 people on board both aircraft were killed.
On 26 April, 1993, Indian Airlines Flight 491 crashed shortly after takeoff from Aurangabad Airport in Maharashtra in a tragic and unusual accident. The Boeing 737-2A8 collied with a truck that had mistakenly entered the runway during the aircraft’s takeoff roll. The impact caused the plane to lose control, crash, and burst into flames. Of the 118 people on board, 55 lost their lives.
On 14 February, 1990, Indian Airlines Flight 605 crashed while attempting to land at HAL Airport in Bangalore, Karnataka. The Airbus A320 descended too early and touched down short of the runway, resulting in a severe crash. Out of the 146 passengers and crew on board, 92 lost their lives in this tragic accident.
On 19 October, 1988, Indian Airlines Flight 113, a Boeing 737, crashed while attempting to land near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Poor visibility severely affected the pilots’ ability to land safely, leading to the fatal accident. Of the people on board, 133 lost their lives, with only two survivors.
On 1 January, 1978, Air India Flight 855, a Boeing 747, crashed into the Arabian Sea shortly after taking off from Mumbai. The crash was caused by instrument failure, which led to spatial disorientation and loss of control by the flight crew. All 213 passengers and crew on board perished in the disaster.
